Hailstorms are one of the main nightmares that homeowners with a bad roof might dread. A vulnerable or older roofing system can not withstand the battering that comes with a stronger hailstorm, and in many cases, large areas of the roof will have to be repaired or even replaced. Taking precautions to prevent hail damage is a good idea, but even then you still have to be cautious and check your roof after the fact to make sure there’s no actual damage.

A close visual inspection is needed first. If you spot cracked, chipped, dented, broken or missing shingles, then you’ll have your first clue that your roof has sustained damage.

Your flashing, gutters and skylights also have to be checked, and you’ll want to get into the attic and look for leaks as well. If the leaks are close to some of your roof’s main valleys then you’ll be able to tell that the culprit is a piece of flashing that might have come loose or that’s been damaged by the hail in some way.
